East District Age Group Championships 2009

The finals of these championships were held on 7th & 8th March 2009 at Glenrothes. All top swimmers from clubs throughout the Lothians, the Borders and Fife had qualified and the competition, as you would imagine, was very tough.

Midlothian swimmers were involved in the very first event with Jo Pettitt and Fiona Inglis competing in the 12/13 years 100m freestyle.  Both girls had been suffering for a considerable time with viruses and were not quite at their best, but performed really well under the circumstances. In the boys same event, Euan Waugh got his first PB of the weekend by just under a second. Read the rest of this entry »

Forres Trip 2009

For the second year in succession a squad of 31 swimmers and 5 adults travelled north on 13th March for the Forres Bluefins 2 day meet.
After settling into our accommodation in Inverness, it was off to Jimmy Chung’s for dinner arriving just on time after foolishly allowing Callum (so Colin says) to lead the way.  After Jack had reduced the restaurant’s profits for the evening by consuming more food than 12 average diners, we made our way back to our accommodation where the swimmers relaxed before the following day’s competition. Website Updates

Hello! If anybody would like something on the website that is not already up then just email me at cmckain@hotmail.co.uk and I try and get it up for you!

This includes anything from additional information, to new club records that I can pass on to the committee.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Bag Packing/Fund Raising Update

Sorry, a little late in reporting this but the last bag packing stint just after Christmas involved a record 56 swimmers and made the club a massive £1607.  Thanks to everyone who turned up and special thanks to Dianne Graham and Yvonne Gray for their continued fantastic efforts in fund raising events – where would we be without them!  The next bagpacking date is Sunday 26 April – get it in your diaries.

Our fundraising account is now the healthiest its been for years and the Fund Raising Committee are actively considering the best way to use and manage the money.  The latest donation is to the Forres Trip happening this weekend.  The Committee also decided that the portion of sponsorship money donated to the club from the 10k swim organised by Vicky should be split 50% to Vicky’s Malawi appeal, and 50% to the fundraising account for future use.

Olympic Challenge 10k Swim

See the Photos on the Members Photo Gallery page!

On Sunday the 15th of February, at The Penicuik Centre, 35 swimmers from the club took part in a 10k swim (400 lengths) to raise money for the club. The 10k distance is swimmings equivilant of a marathon so it was a tough event for all who took part. Some of the younger swimmers did the swim in teams of two.

The first swimmer home was Jack Bisset in an great time of 2 hours and 21 minutes closely followed by Lisa Fraser in a time of 2 hours 23 minutes. All other single and team swimmers completed the 10k successfully and a special mention to Michael Flynn who was the youngest swimmer to complete the swim.

There was a great atmosphere at the event and lots of encouragement as swimmers began to tire.

Thanks to the Staff of the Penicuik Centre and to all the helpers. It looks like we have managed to raise over £1000 for the club and I have managed to raise over £600 for my trip to Malawi.

2009 Club Championship Dance (and Trophy Nominations)

Fun was had by all at the Club Championship Dance in January. As always, a number of trophies were presented. Every year swimmers are nominated for two trophies:
Davy Combe Trophy This is awarded to a swimmer in one of the older groups including Junior Masters, who trains very well and puts a great deal of effort into swims at competitions etc. but does not often achieve recognition with medals etc. (Lower squads still have time to peak as they are younger, and through time can pull through with training).
Nominees:
Gold Squad – ErinAnderson and Vicky Mcfarlane
Silver Squad- Helen Cassidy,
Junior Masters- Shaunna Anderson.
It was agreed it should be awarded jointly to Shaunna and Erin Anderson.

Midlothian Cup Awarded to a talented swimmer doing really well at training and achieving great results at competitions.
Nominees:
Gold Squad- Chris Kerr and Jo Pettitt,
Silver squad -Thomas Dryden who has broken 5 records,
Bronze Squad- Beth Denholm who is super determined and competitive.
It was agreed the trophy should be awarded to Jo Pettitt.
